Michigan gets first snow of season as freezing temps move into central US

Michigan confirmed its first snowflakes of the season in the upper Peninsula on Thursday, the National Weather Service confirmed, as Marquette only reached a high of 57 degrees on Thursday after falling to a low of 36, the Detroit Free Press reported.

On Friday, freezing temperatures were expected to move in for the upper Midwest, with Wausau, Omaha, and Bismarck all reaching the freezing point or lower.

Firefighters face new danger as EVs spontaneously combusting in Florida after hurricane water damage

Electric vehicles caught in the floodwaters of hurricane Ian are spontaneously combusting, and a top Florida state official and fire marshal warned on Thursday that firefighters have already battled a number of fires caused by EV batteries corroded by previously being waterlogged, Zero Hedge reported.

“That’s a new challenge that our firefighters haven’t faced before. At least on this kind of scale,” the fire marshal tweeted. “It takes special training and understanding of EVs to ensure these fires are put out quickly and safely.”

Tropical Storm Julia forms in the Atlantic, and could strike Nicaragua on Sunday as hurricane

Tropical Storm Julia formed in the Atlantic on Friday, the 10th named storm of the season, and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane over the weekend, WFLA reported.

As of 11 AM ET on Friday, Julia was about 110 miles west of the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia, South America’s northernmost point, with maximum, sustained winds of 40 mph and tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 80 miles from the storm’s center, moving west at 18 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Current models predict the storm to strike Nicaragua as a Category 1 hurricane by 8 AM on Sunday with winds of 85 mph.

Another system in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression 12, which previously had an 80% chance of development, dissipated Thursday night.
