Hurricane Ian Spawns a Nor’easter, Flooding the Mid-Atlantic Coast

The remnants of hurricane Ian have sloshed the mid-Atlantic states with record rainfall, bringing coastal flooding that appears will continue through late week; plus, Biden heads to Florida and today’s weather alerts.

Hurricane Ian brings a nor’easter and flooding rain to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

The combination of tropical rainstorm Ian and its interaction with a coastal storm that developed in the Northeast has brought powerful impacts to the region.

“A coastal storm developed off the Northeast coast Sunday afternoon, absorbing energy left over from Tropical Rainstorm Ian,” AccuWeather reported.

The remnants of Hurricane Ian hovered over the mid-Atlantic, bringing a nor’easter that has dumped chilly, copious amounts of windswept rain that has led to coastal flooding, with tidal and freshwater flooding anticipated as well. The heaviest rain was on Tuesday, but showers are still lingering along the mid-Atlantic coast on Wednesday.

In New Jersey, floodwaters rose halfway up the wheels of vehicles as streets flooded. There were reports of flooding in Stone Harbor, Avalon, Wildwood, and Cape May. Avalon experienced significant beach erosion in the north end, AccuWeather reported. Sea Isle City saw 8.14 inches of rain, while West Creek experienced 6.04 inches, Pinewald, 5.80″, Slaughter Beach 5.69″, and Trenton 4.40 inches.

Heavy amounts of rain were also reported in Virginia, Maryland, Southeast Pennsylvania, and Delaware, where coastal flooding shut down roads.

Nor’easter: 3-day outlook for the mid-Atlantic & Northeast

On Wednesday, thunderstorms from Virginia to Maine along the coast and inland towards Central Pennsylvania and central New York. On Thursday, the rain moves inland over the Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic, and Northeast from Illinois to Maine. On Friday, more prevalent rain will encompass most of the mid-Atlantic and the entire Northeast, with thunderstorms over parts of New Hampshire and Maine. Mixed precipitation is anticipated over New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and western Maine, according to the National Weather Service forecast (NWS).

President Biden to visit Florida

President Joe Biden will visit hurricane-ravaged Florida on Wednesday, where he will pledge that federal, state, and local governments will help rebuild homes and businesses, WBTV reported.

The emphasis is on putting politics aside and focusing on the victims and those in need. Thus far, at least 84 people have been confirmed dead.
