Solar-powered town took a direct hit from Hurricane Ian, never lost power
The planned community of Babcock Ranch, Florida, about 12 miles northeast of Fort Myers, took a direct hit from Hurricane Ian. The town was built 25-30 feet above sea level, completely solar-powered, and all of its electrical and phone lines are buried, CBS reports. As a result, the town never lost power during the storm.
DeSantis says nearly 98% of Florida power outages restored
Bryan Griffin, press secretary for Florida governor Ron DeSantis, announced on Sunday that 97.79% of power outages have been restored in Florida, Fox reported. In addition, water service has been restored to all Lee County Utilities customers, and the Florida Department of Transportation was able to restore access to Pine Island by building a temporary bridge in less than three days, Griffin said.
New Atlantic disturbance headed for Southwest Gulf
With Tropical Storm Julia lashing El Salvador, forecasters from the National Hurricane Center (NEC) are watching a new disturbance to the north of the storm, moving in a westward track toward the southwest Gulf of Mexico over the next day or two, WFLA reported. The NHC is currently giving disturbance a 10% chance of development over the next five days. Regardless of development, the storm will bring heavy rain to parts of Belize, Guatemala, and southern Mexico.
