People are digging out after an early winter storm dropped a foot of snow in the Midwest, while 70 million people remain under a variety of winter warnings. Record cold in the South, plus today’s weather alerts and forecast.

Winter weather, rain, and thunderstorms over the eastern half of the US, while heavy rain and thunderstorms could bring flash flooding throughout Maine.
Here are Tuesday’s weather alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS).
Winter storm warning: Northern Michigan.
Winter weather advisory: Northeast Michigan.
Freeze warning for portions of Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
Frost advisory for portions of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, and Vermont.
Freeze watch: New York City and surrounding areas.
Flood watch: Maine.
Red flag warning: Western Florida Panhandle; southwestern, central, and northern Georgia.
Early winter storm drops over a foot of snow in Midwest, storms continue on Tuesday
An early winter storm dropped over a foot of snow in parts of Wisconsin and Michigan, Today reported. Chicago saw its first flurries of the season, and Cincinnati set a record for its earliest snow of the season, Fox 19 reported.
Snow is expected in southeastern Indiana on Tuesday. The strong cold front moving through could bring snow to other parts of the Ohio Valley. For areas surrounding the Great Lakes, additional snow between 3-6 inches is expected in the region on Tuesday, Fox TV 6 reported.
Record cold temperatures possible on Tuesday
Some parts of the South could break record cold temperatures for fall on Tuesday, Fox reported:
- New Orleans, Louisiana, at 63 degrees
- Chattanooga, Tennessee, at 53,
- Birmingham, Alabama, at 55
- Meridian, Mississippi, at 57 degrees
Tuesday’s forecast
Rain and thunderstorms around the Great Lakes region, Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic. Mixed precipitation to parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York could bring snow flurries or up to 6 inches of snow and some isolated areas.
Rain for New England areas of the Northeast, where thunderstorms and heavy downpours could bring flash flooding over much of Maine (see alerts above).
Thunderstorms for central and southern Florida.
Rain over her portions of southeastern New Mexico into northern, western, and southern Texas, with thunderstorms along the southern Texas-Mexico region.
The remainder of the nation will be mostly precipitation-free.
