Thunderstorms over the Southwest, Northern Rockies, central Plains, and upper Midwest. Separate band of thunderstorms over the mid-South, South, and Southeast.
Heavy rain with potential flash flooding in the West over southern California, southern Nevada, most of Arizona, and into west-central New Mexico.
In the East, heavy rain and possible flooding along the Gulf states over eastern Louisiana, central and southern Mississippi, central and southern Alabama, central and southern Georgia, southern South Carolina, and the Florida Panhandle and along the state’s western coast.
An undersea volcano off the coast of Japan is likely to erupt
For the first time in over 35 years, volcanic activity is visible in the surrounding waters of an off-shore volcano. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a warning the volcano is likely to erupt, the Weather Channel reported. The volcano is located about 600 miles from central Tokyo. As of now, it is unclear whether the eruption will impact anyone on land.
California declares fire emergency amid heatwave, tropical storm impact, and possible flooding all in the same week
It’s been a rough week in California with a heat wave straining the electrical grid beyond its capacity and an outbreak of wildfires. California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for counties threatened by the dangerous Fairview and Mosquito Fires on Thursday, Axios reported.
Officials ordered evacuations for some 5,000 homes impacted by the Fairview Fire near Hemet.
Flooding is another concern for the state as Tropical Storm Kay bears down on southern California. Many beachfront properties, such as those in Long Beach, are rushing to build a high berm in hopes of keeping homes and businesses above rising water, CBS reported.
Thousands of US firefighters battling 71 fires
Across the US, particularly in California, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon, thousands of US firefighters are battling at least 71 fires.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued red flag alerts for portions of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas, Axios reported.
Hurricane Earl to bring life-threatening swells to East Coast
Hurricane Earl is currently a Category 2 hurricane with 100 mph winds and is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane (winds between 111-129 mph) as the storm moves toward Bermuda. Swells caused by the hurricane are expected to reach the US East Coast and cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions through the weekend, according to the NWS, Penn Live reported.
