False Fall? Northeast Faces Severe Weather: Tornado Warning and Flooding Threat

Forecasters say don’t be fooled by “false fall.” The northeast is under severe weather, flooding, and tornado threat. Activity ramps up in the Atlantic, plus a flooding threat in West. Today’s weather alerts, news, and forecast.

Don’t be fooled by “false fall”

A cold front has moved into parts of the US, particularly the West and Northeast, giving the impression of an early fall. But forecasters say don’t be fooled by this “false fall,” as the shot of cooler air will be short-lived. By midweek, temperatures will begin to rise above average in the central US.

By Friday, temperatures for the Southwest, central US, and the eastern half of the nation will be above average, CNN reported. Only the extreme west coast will see below-average temperatures.

Northeast: Severe weather risk, tornado warning, and flooding threat

Strong storm activity in the Northeast could bring severe weather, including damaging winds, large hail, and heavy wind. In addition, there is the possibility of flooding. The threat of tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk over Eastern New York, central and southern Vermont, Western New Hampshire, central and western Massachusetts, and northern and northwestern Connecticut. A Level 1 risk extends outward over the New England states into western Maine, northern New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania.

New York flooding, tornado warning

There were reports of flooding in Queens, which led to multiple subway delays in New York City after an early morning storm, Fox 5 NY reported. A tornado warning was also issued briefly in Brooklyn.

“Locally heavy rain could cause minor flooding in urban, poor drainage and low-lying areas. Isolated flash flooding is possible,” the daily voice reported.

West: Thunderstorms bring flood threat to several states

Thunderstorms over the West on Friday will bring the threat of heavy rain with potential flash flooding over four states.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for western, west-central, and southern Nevada into southwestern, central, and northeastern Utah; northwestern Arizona; and western, north-central, and south-central New Mexico.

Farther north, a flood watch over north-central and northeastern Washington.

Fire threat and poor air quality in Northwest

The NWS issued a red flag warning on Tuesday for central and eastern Wyoming into southwestern South Dakota, as well as an air quality alert for parts of northern California; south-central Oregon; western and eastern Washington; southern Idaho; and northern, central, and western Montana. A lake wind advisory is also in effect for eastern Montana.

Activity ramps up in the Atlantic

“Disturbance 1” has grown in strength since yesterday, with forecasters from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) now giving the tropical wave a 40 percent chance of cyclone formation in the next five days. The system is currently midway between the West Coast of Africa and the Windward Islands.

“Disturbance 2” still retains a 20 percent chance of development in the next five days as the system off the coast of West Africa approaches the Cabo Verda Islands.
