Thunderstorms across most of the US will bring severe weather to the Southeast and a flooding threat across the Lower 48 to start the week, while the Farmer’s Almanac predicts an extreme winter for most of the US.
‘Farmer’s Almanac’ predicts extreme winter for most of the US
The Farmer’s Almanac released its annual winter forecast, and it predicts extreme winter weather for most of the US during the 2022-23 winter. With the exception of the Southwest, all areas are looking at a frigid winter. The Northwest should brace for especially brisk temperatures, according to these predictions.
Here is how the Farmer’s Almanac described its predictions for the various regions:
Northwest: Brisk, normal precipitation.
Southwest: Mild, drier than normal.
Northern Rockies/upper Midwest: Hibernation zone, glacial, snow-filled.
South-Central US: Chilly, normal precipitation.
Great Lakes/Ohio Valley: Unreasonably cold, snowy.
Mid-South/South/Southeast: Shivery, wet, and slushy.
Mid-Atlantic/Northeast: Significant shivers, slushy, icy, snowy.
Severe weather for the Southeast
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a level 2 severe weather risk for Monday over central North Carolina into north-central South Carolina. A lesser risk extends in a southwesterly direction where storms could be strong over the remainder of the Carolinas, into central and northern Georgia, central Alabama, and east-central Mississippi.
Multiple flooding threats across US, particularly in the West
The risk of potential flooding spans from the West Coast to the Virginias on Monday as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued numerous flood-related alerts.
Flash flood warning: southern Texas.
Flood watch: southern Nevada; southeastern California; northwestern Arizona; southern Utah; north-central, northeastern, central, and southeastern Colorado; northern and central New Mexico; southern Texas; West Virginia; western Virginia; northwest North Carolina.
Heavy rain will also bring the potential of flash flooding over central and southern Utah, northern and central Arizona, throughout most of Colorado and southern Texas along the Mexico border.
Heat alerts for Monday
High temperatures will be present over a number of states in the central US and the South, as well as in the West. Here are Monday’s heat alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS).
Heat advisory: eastern Oklahoma; eastern Texas; central and southern Missouri; northern and central Louisiana; Mississippi; northwestern and southwestern California.
Excessive heat watch: eastern Washington; northern Idaho; north-central, central, south-central California.
6 satellites to form huge virtual telescope to study space weather
NASA plans to link up six tiny satellites, the combination of which will form a huge virtual telescope that will allow the agency to study hazardous space weather events in more detail than ever before, Digital Trends reported. The project is called SunRISE, and will synchronize the six satellites, which are roughly the size of a toaster, to work in unison to form a six-mile wide telescope that will allow NASA to gain much more detailed data than is available from the ground. The project is set for launch in 2024.
