Soaring heat for the central US and East this week
August is bringing the heat, beginning with the central US on Tuesday, and moving to the east over the next couple of days, where parts of the Northeast could see a 100+ heat index on Thursday, NJ.com reported.
NWS heat alerts
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued heat-related alerts for the following areas on Tuesday: Central and eastern North Dakota; central and eastern Nebraska; central and eastern Kansas; central, northern, and eastern Oklahoma; southern Minnesota; most of Iowa, Missouri; West-central, central and eastern Arkansas; Northeastern Mississippi; southwestern Tennessee; western and southern Illinois; Southeastern Texas.
An excessive heat warning was issued for southeastern Minnesota.
Severe weather risk for the upper Midwest, shifts East on Wednesday
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk on Tuesday for parts of the upper Midwest including northeastern North Dakota, northern and northeastern Minnesota; northern and north-central Wisconsin; and western northern Michigan.
The threat will shift to the east on Wednesday over southwestern, central, and eastern Michigan.
Flooding threats throughout the week, Kentucky could see heavy rain on Tuesday
The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast heavy rain with potential flash flooding throughout the week.
On Tuesday, the flooding threat will be over parts of the Ohio Valley and mid-South, including southern Illinois, southern Indiana, southwestern Ohio, throughout Kentucky, and into northern, central, and eastern Tennessee.
The death toll from last week’s flooding in Eastern Kentucky has now reached 37, Gov. Andy Beshear said on Tuesday, announcing additional bodies were found overnight and more residents remain missing, Fox reported.
The National Weather Service has forecast several rounds of continuing showers and storms over Kentucky on Tuesday, NTD reported.
Wednesday & Thursday flood outlook
The flooding threat shifts slightly northwest on Wednesday over portions of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, according to the NWS forecast.
On Thursday, there’s a threat of flooding on two fronts. In the east, heavy rain for the potential flash flooding will spread over portions of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York. In the Southwest, a flooding threat over portions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado.
