Much awaited relief from the heat arrives, as stormy conditions will diminish in the East… but not for the West, which will be under continual threat of flash flooding for several days. See the weekend forecast and more weather news.

Big weather pattern change bringing relief

A slow-moving cold front in the South will be making its way toward the Northeast, finally bringing some relief on Friday after days of dangerous heat in the region. That’s great news for New Englanders who have endured higher-than-usual temperatures.

“For some areas, the cold front will bring a taste of fall, which is a little over a month away,” AccuWeather reported.

Heat advisory: southeastern Montana; northeastern Wyoming; western South Dakota; southwestern California.

Flash flood warning: Central West Virginia

Flood watch: Northern, northeast and southern Nevada; central, west-central, and southwestern Utah; northern and northwestern Arizona; southeastern California; northern, central southwestern, and south-central New Mexico.

Flood advisory: southeastern and south-central New Mexico; northern and northeastern South Dakota; northwestern and southern Illinois; eastern Iowa; southern Indiana; southeastern Missouri; western Kentucky.

Coastal flood advisory: southeastern Louisiana; southern Mississippi.

Red flag alert: eastern Washington; northern Idaho; southwest Oregon; northern California.

The weekend forecast: Thunderstorms, Flooding threat in the West

Thunderstorms for most of the nation on Thursday, gradually diminishing later into the weekend, but the flood threat in the West will remain. Here is the latest four-day forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Thursday: Thunderstorms across the US, flooding threat in West

Widespread thunderstorms will cover much of the Lower 48, particularly in the West and across the South and North along the Atlantic from Florida to Maine. Another band of storms over parts of the upper Midwest and Ohio Valley.

Heavy rain with potential flash flooding in the West could impact several states, including Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, California, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Friday: Flooding threat in West expands

Thunderstorms for much of the West, as well as a band of storms stretching along the southern corridor, around the Gulf of Mexico, and north along the Atlantic from Florida to New Jersey. Another band of storms over the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region.

Heavy rain with the potential for flash flooding will expand in the West to include portions of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.

Saturday: Diminishing storms, but Western flood threat continues

Scattered thunderstorms mainly concentrated over parts of the West, upper Midwest, Great Lakes region, along the Gulf of Mexico, and in the Atlantic from Florida to South Carolina.

Heavy rain will continue to bring the threat of flash flooding to several states in the West, including New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming.

Sunday: Fewer thunderstorms, flooding threat in West

Thunderstorms will continue to diminish, with the heaviest activity in the West over portions of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, and Wyoming, where heavy rain and flash flooding remains a possibility.

Another band of heavy storm activity is predicted along the Gulf of Mexico coastal areas and all of Florida. Expect lighter storms over the Ohio Valley.
