Storms threaten East Coast: Severe weather and flooding

The eastern half of the US faces a sizable severe weather risk and flooding threat on Friday.

Widespread flood threat

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for the East Coast for northern Virginia, central and western Maryland, and Washington, D.C., as well as farther inland for eastern West Virginia.

The NWS forecast warns that heavy rain will bring the potential of flash flooding along the coast of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, as well as farther inland including portions of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

Severe weather risk

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk for parts of the East including southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, southern Indiana, Kentucky, northern Tennessee, and western Virginia. The highest risk will be damaging winds, with a lesser risk of hail and a low risk of tornadoes.

Severe weather over the northern Rockies

In the Northwest, the northern Rockies will see a Level 2 severe weather risk stretching from Idaho to the Dakotas. The impacted areas are northeastern Idaho, Montana, western North Dakota, and northwestern South Dakota. The most significant threat will be damaging winds and large hail, with a low threat of tornadoes.

Excessive heat over the South and Southeast

Excessive heat and above-average heat over the South, Southeast, and Southwest. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the following heat-related alerts for Friday, which encompass parts of the Southwest and nearly the entirety of the south and southeast.

Excessive heat warning: California deserts; central and southwestern Arizona; eastern Texas; southeastern Kansas; northeastern Oklahoma; southern Missouri; west-central, central, and eastern Arkansas; northeastern Louisiana; southern Illinois; western Kentucky; western and central Tennessee; northern and western Mississippi; northern Alabama.

Here’s a look at the latest weekend forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Friday: Thunderstorms, severe weather, flooding risk

Scattered thunderstorms across the lower 48, particularly for the eastern half of the nation where heavy rain with the potential of flash flooding will impact a large portion of the Ohio Valley, mid-Atlantic, dipping into parts of the mid-South and along the southeast coast over the Carolinas and Virginia. Storms will also bring severe weather over parts of the Ohio Valley and mid-South (*see above).

Severe weather threat in the West over Montana and the Dakotas.

Saturday: East Coast flood risk, severe weather over northern Rockies, upper Midwest

Scattered thunderstorms along the northern tier in the West will bring the potential of severe weather over Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

Thunderstorms will blanket the South, Southeast, as well as parts of the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic.

A large area of heavy rain with potential flash flooding over the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey.

Sunday: Severe weather for upper Midwest, Southeast flood risk

Thunderstorms along the northern tier will move east, shifting the severe weather threat over parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota, bordering Wisconsin in the north. Another band of thunderstorms in the south and southeast will bring heavy rain with potential flash flooding along the Atlantic coast over parts of Georgia and South Carolina.
