The eastern US is under an expansive threat of severe weather that stretches from Tennessee to Maine, with a trouble spot over the Mid-Atlantic. Look for strong activity in the Gulf, while the Western heat wave expands.
Severe weather threat stretches from Tennessee to Maine
A vast expanse of potential severe weather stretches from Tennessee all the way to Maine on Tuesday, impacting at least 15 states, with an enhanced trouble spot over the Mid-Atlantic.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued a Level 2 severe weather risk over portions of Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Damaging winds are the greatest threat with this storm.
An enhanced Level 3 severe weather threat is over northern Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., eastern and southeastern Pennsylvania, and western and northern New Jersey.
A Level 3 Severe Weather Risk is defined as numerous, widespread, severe, and intense storms with likely significant wind damage, large hail between 1-2 inches, and a few isolated tornadoes.
Flood alert in the West, Southwest
Scattered thunderstorms will bring heavy rain with the possibility of flash flooding two parts of the West and Southwest on Tuesday over southern Colorado into northern and central New Mexico. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for these areas.
Tropical development still possible in the Gulf, potential flooding rain coming for several days
The current forecast by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is still giving an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the northern Gulf of Mexico dubbed Disturbance 1 a 30% chance of tropical development over the next 5 days.
Regardless of whether this system becomes a tropical storm or not, it is going to deliver a lot of rain along the Gulf Coast over the next several days into the weekend, the Weather Channel reports.
The NWS is warning of heavy rain with potential flash flooding on Wednesday and Thursday along the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle.
Heat wave continues over central US, expands northward in West
The heat wave continues this week particularly over parts of the central and southern US while expanding northward in parts of the West. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the following heat-related alerts for Tuesday:

Heat advisory for portions of southern and southeastern Washington; northeastern southern and eastern Oregon; southern Idaho; northern Nevada; northern Utah; northeastern, central, and southeastern Montana; eastern and southern Oklahoma; Arkansas; northern and southeastern Louisiana; central, southern, western and eastern Texas; southeastern New Mexico.
