Strong thunderstorms are likely in several regions on Thursday, with potential severe weather over the Midwest. Heat relief is coming to most areas late-week except for the South, which is under heat advisories and warnings.
Strong thunderstorms in several regions
Scattered thunderstorms across the nation over parts of the Northwest, West, Southwest, Midwest, South, Southeast, and over portions of Pennsylvania and New York.
The areas that could see the strongest storms with a marginal risk of severe weather are in the West over eastern Nevada and western Utah, in the Northwest over central and northeastern Montana, in the Midwest over southern Nebraska, southwestern Iowa, northwestern Missouri, and much of Kansas, and in the upper Midwest over central and northeastern South Dakota, southeastern North Dakota, much of Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Severe weather in the Midwest
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk for portions of southern and south-central Nebraska into north-central, central, and east-central Kansas on Thursday. The most significant threats with the storm will be damaging winds and large hail. The probability of a tornado is 2 percent.
On Friday, a wide area of potential Level 2 severe weather risk over North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska, which could also bring heavy rain and the possibility of flash flooding, according to the National Weather Service.
Heat relief coming, but South under advisories and warnings
Heat relief is on the way for many parts of the US as we progress into the late week. By early next week, parts of the Southwest, Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic will experience below-average temperatures, the Weather Channel reports.
However, no relief yet for the South, which will experience high temperatures for at least the next five days. Residents there can expect feels-like triple-digit heat through the weekend and into the beginning of next week.
