Storms left heavy damage and deaths across the US on Wednesday, as another round of severe weather threatens 8 states on Thursday, with more strong storms on Friday and dangerous heat through the weekend.
Dangerous storms leave damage and death
Storms left a trail of destruction and death across the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and mid-Atlantic on Wednesday.
In Arkansas, three people died after stormy weather caused a fiery crash on Interstate 30, 4029 TV reported. The crash involved at least a dozen vehicles including tractor-trailers.
In Darke County, Ohio, a suspected tornado caused a car to flip 4-6 times on state Route 49. The man walked away with only minor injuries and a cut on the head, WHIOTV 7 reported.
Heavy damage was reported in Clark County, Ohio from suspected multiple tornadoes, shredding sections of and ultimately flattening the Meijer Distribution Center in Tipp City, as well as overturning cars, the Weather Channel reported. Neighborhoods saw homes damaged, trees and fences downed, WDTN 2 News reported. A tornado was captured on video in Gordon, Ohio. A tornado occurred in Miami County near West Milton and Tipp City around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, the NWS confirmed.
In Putnam County, West Virginia, downed trees, a collapsed barn, structural damage, and power outages were recorded, Fox 11 reported.
In Maryland, trees were toppled, homes were damaged, and power lines were knocked out, CBS reported. Heavy flooding across the DC region caused the cancellation of a concert as water flooded down the steps of the venue, Fox 5 reported.
8 states under threat of severe weather on Thursday
At least 8 states in the Midwest, Southwest, and South will be under the threat of severe weather bringing damaging winds, large hail, flooding, and isolated tornadoes on Thursday, The Weather Channel reported. The greatest activity is projected to occur in the afternoon into the evening hours.
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk over central and southern Nebraska, eastern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, Kansas, southwestern Missouri, Oklahoma, northwestern and west-central Arkansas, and northern Texas.
Flash flooding risk
Very heavy downpours are expected with the strongest risk of potential flash flooding over central and southeastern Kansas into southwestern Missouri, northeastern and Eastern Oklahoma, into northwestern and West-central Arkansas, according to the NWS.
Friday Outlook: Another round of severe storms will threaten at least 7 states
Thunderstorms over the eastern half of the nation with a strong concentration over the Midwest, Ohio Valley, South, and Southeast, while the West and Northeast will be relatively thunderstorm-free. Rain for the Pacific Northwest.
Severe weather will threaten at least 7 states including portions of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle, according to the latest forecast by the National Weather Service (NWS).
“Dangerously hot conditions,” NWS warns
The NWS is warning of “dangerously hot conditions” over the West and Southwest from Thursday morning until Saturday night, particularly over portions of Arizona, California, and Nevada, where temperatures could soar as high as 117 degrees in some places, the Hill reported.
High temps are expected to affect northern regions of the West as well. Sacramento, in northern California, a “record-high” in the triple digits could be reached this weekend.
