Severe Weather in Central US

At least six states are at risk of severe weather, and four states are under threat of flooding on Tuesday. Ghe flooding risk moves eastward on Wednesday, then the severe threat returns to the upper Midwest on Thursday.

Severe weather, flooding risk over central US

Thunderstorms over parts of the West and Central US on Tuesday will bring the threat of severe weather to at least six states and a risk of flooding to at least four states, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Plenty of heat and moisture will lead to severe storms late on Tuesday, according to the forecast by the Weather Channel. Winds could gust as high as 30-40 mph over the Plains. Damaging winds will be one of the biggest threats, as well as heavy rain and flash flooding.

The NWS warns that heavy rain could lead to potential flash flooding over southeastern Nebraska, northeastern Kansas, southern Iowa, and northern and central Missouri.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) of the NOAA has issued a Level 3 severe weather risk over northeastern Kansas, southeastern Nebraska, southwestern Iowa, and northwestern Missouri on Tuesday.

Level 3 Severe Weather Risk is defined as numerous, widespread severe, and intense storms with the possibility of likely significant wind damage, large hail between 1-2 inches, and a few isolated tornadoes.

The SPC has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk over much of Kansas and Missouri, into southern and eastern Nebraska, as well as western and southern Iowa.

Severe weather outlook for Wednesday and Thursday

Here is a look at potential severe weather conditions for Wednesday and Thursday according to the latest forecasts by the Storm Prediction Center (SPC).

Wednesday

two potential severe weather fronts, currently rated as a level 1 severe weather risk. The first is over portions of Colorado, New Mexico, western Kansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas. The second front is over eastern Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The NWS is also warning of heavy rain with potential flash flooding over eastern Kentucky, southern West Virginia, and southwestern Virginia.

Thursday

According to the SPC, a potential level 2 severe weather risk over portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin on Thursday.

The NWS forecasts heavy rain with potential flash flooding over northern and northeastern North Dakota into northwestern Minnesota.

Snow returns to the forecast over Idaho and Montana.

Widespread risk of critical fire weather is possible in the West over Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas.
